U.S. Marshal Chase Reynolds is on a mission—to track down an escaped train robber, even if it takes him into the wilds of Canada! Hot on the outlaw’s trail, he follows him into the Canadian West—and encounters more than he bargained for when he’s taken prisoner by a beautiful woman.

Sara Cranston is trying to hold on to her ranch that a band of outlaws is determined to steal from her. A woman alone, she’s “easy pickin’s”—and this ruthless crew is after more than the ranch—there’s a legend of buried gold hidden somewhere on her land.

Sara and Chase have a shared past—one that is full of lies and secrets…and love. Seventeen years have gone by, and the passion is still there between them—but will deceit and mistrust keep them from the happiness they both crave?

Chase has a duty to bring in the outlaws, but now he must work fast to do it before they murder the woman he loves. Can he convince her the future is still theirs for the taking if they only survive to enjoy it? Anything can happen BENEATH A HORSE-THIEF MOON…

I loved this heartwarming adventure from talented debut author Elizabeth Clements.
—Jacquie Rogers, author of the Hearts of Owyhee series

EXCERPT

Whistling Blaze over, Chase pulled rawhide strips from his saddlebag and hobbled the outlaw. There wasn't much he could do about the man's wounds except clean them with water from his canteen. Folding his handkerchief over the bloody stumps, he bound them with the man's bandana.
“I'd just as soon see you bleed to death,” Chase muttered to the unconscious man. “One less outlaw. But dead men tell no tales. And I want to hear all about your rustling partners.”
Murmuring to calm the skittish tethered horse, Chase slung the outlaw across the saddle and tied him down with a rope. He did the same with the dead man, although neither was a featherweight. His shoulder throbbed and burned like hell. Blood trickled inside his sleeve.
“Hold it right there,” a familiar voice growled behind him.
Damn, I'm getting old if a woman gets the drop on me twice in one night.

Previously published as TOUCH OF TEXAS

EXCERPT:

Rachel wrapped her arms around his and held him close. “You’ll be fine, Mr. McCain. It will stop soon. Your body is only trying to warm itself. Don’t fight it. You’re safe here.”
She kept talking to him until the shivering began to abate. Gradually, he quieted and his eyes drifted closed. She thought he was still awake when his fingers tightened on her waist, but they relaxed just as quickly. When he didn’t move again, she risked smoothing a hand over his shoulder and across his chest. He seemed to be a little warmer.
Relief flooded her as his heart settled into a steady, strong rhythm. He was going to live. As the quiet seeped into her, she became aware that she was still wrapped around the stranger, her legs straddling his hips. Heat washed through her again. In her mind she heard the lecturing voices of her adoptive parents. She squeezed her eyes shut, hoping to banish the memory of the Reverend’s preaching, but the words wouldn’t stop. Jezebel, he’d called her. Nothing but a sinner damned for eternity.
Tears stung Rachel’s eyes. She wasn’t like her mother, yet here she was, lying across a man not her husband. Ashamed of her reaction to a complete stranger, she tried to slide off him, but his hands wrapped around her waist and held her in place. She stilled, not wanting to wake him. She would just rest a minute until he was more deeply asleep.

Weariness swamped her. She fought to stay awake, but the night finally caught up with her. Snuggling closer to his increasing warmth, Rachel drifted off to sleep with her head on his chest and his heartbeat in her ear.

New Release -- GAMBLING WITH LOVE by Kaye Spencer -- Giveaway!

When beautiful lady gambler Lainie Conrad’s husband, Seaton, is murdered, she sets out for revenge. Lainie is certain that cardsharp Rutherford Tolliver is guilty, but she has to find a way to prove it—and when she does, she’s not about to let her own little ol’ arrest get in the way!

U.S. Deputy Marshal Nick Foster catches up with her, determined to get to the bottom of why she walked out on him months earlier. There’s a high bounty on Lainie’s head for a murder she didn’t commit, so Nick has no choice but to arrest her for her own protection—and to keep his heart safe, as well.

But Lainie has bought in to a high stakes poker tournament in Denver, Colorado, and nothing will keep her from facing the scheming Tolliver across the poker table in a final showdown that pits skill against skill and trickery against vengeance. She escapes from Nick once more and runs to Denver. She must keep her vow to her murdered husband, for only then will she be free to find love again.

The ghosts of the past are no match for The Lady of the Cards when her future is at stake. She can’t afford to lose when she’s GAMBLING WITH LOVE…

EXCERPT:

The fiery spark in Lainie’s eyes was the only outward indication the man had ruffled her impassive composure.
“Yes, I will be a player in that game, and it will be my pleasure to finally take all of your money. Perhaps I’ll feel generous after I win to front you a little something so you can leave town.” Lainie nodded to the cowboys. “Again. Gentlemen, goodnight.”
With the fluid movement of a striking snake, the cardsharp snatched hold of Lainie’s hand and halted her exit. She neither struggled nor spoke a word. To anyone who didn’t know her, she might have seemed indifferent, but Nick recognized the unreserved loathing in the steady, steely gaze she fixed upon the gambler’s face. There was a history between them that Nick wanted to know more about.
“Stay awhile, Mrs. Conrad. We’ve known each other long enough to put aside formal pretenses. Let’s dispense with this ongoing façade. It’s tiresome. There’s no reason for either of us to spend the rest of this night, or any night in the future, alone.” The gambler raked his gaze over Lainie’s body, his lips curled in a leer that said he was a man accustomed to getting what he wanted.

Nick’s temper rose, but he held back, watching. If he knew nothing else about Lainie Conrad, he knew she was capable of handling herself with any man in any situation. Still, he pushed back the side of his duster and flipped the leather thong off the hammer of the short-barreled .44 at his hip.

#NewRelease -- Belinda's Yankee by Agnes Alexander -- #Giveaway

Belinda Babcock, a beautiful southern belle, barely escapes the Union soldiers who kill her father in cold blood and burn their home. When she discovers a wounded Yankee officer not far from her small cave, she vows to kill him—but discovers she can’t do it. Instead, she brings Major Victor McKay back to her sanctuary and keeps him safe, nursing him back to health.

Handsome Victor McKay has his own life in New York to return to—that of a wealthy banker on the verge of starting his life with his fiancée, Felicity. He helps Belinda find her aunt and uncle before they part ways, and he makes his way back north. But the homecoming he receives is not at all what he expects—and he can’t stop thinking about the night of passion that he and Belinda shared during their journey to find her relatives.

Victor realizes he and Belinda are meant to be together, and he intends to find her. With no way to track her, he only knows she’s claiming his name. Why is she pretending to be his wife? Does Belinda have a secret of her own?

EXCERPT

"Come with me, Belinda." He grabbed her hand.
     "What's going on?"
     "The Yankees are coming. Hurry."
“I thought the war was about over.”
“It’s getting close to ending, but apparently it’s not over yet.”
     "How do you know?"
"They've set fire to the cotton in the north field. I barely got away. Now, come on. We must hurry."
With her heart pounding, she followed him into his study.
He pushed his desk aside, ripped back the rug and opened the trap door. "Hurry child, get inside."
Belinda didn't argue. She stepped down the short ladder leading to the secret tunnel he had dug for just such an occasion. When her feet touched bottom she turned to look up at her father. "I'm in. Come on."
"I can't, honey. They saw me come to the house and they'll never give up until they find me. I'm sorry, but this is one time you'll have to be on your own." He smiled at her.
"No! I won't go without you, Papa."
"You must, Belinda. You have a life ahead of you and you have to live. Do it for me, child." He started closing the trap door.
     "No!"
"I love you, Belinda. Never forget that." The door closed and she heard him slide the bar across the top of the trap door, then heard the rustle as he replace the rug, and the scrape as he pulled the desk across the tunnel entrance.

** Strong language and sexual content**

EXCERPT:
The fire, fanned by the capricious summer wind, had crawled across the flatlands like a plague of hungry locusts. In one night, the town of Newton, Kansas–with the exception of a single brick building–was reduced to a broad wasteland of charred ruins, the heat so intense the Santa Fe tracks buckled and wrenched free from their ties, the warped steel rising skyward like the tentacles of a great dying beast.
It took them a year to rebuild the town, to erase the black scars of the flames, and to begin again. But the townsmen had learned their lesson. The wood frame structures were replaced with buildings constructed of red brick and stone, an essence of durability and continuity in the carefully trawled mortar and pillared façades.
Prosperity had touched the town once more. The influx of money from Eastern speculators had boosted the local economy, and the itch to grow–to keep growing–had touched them all. The town had recovered and the cattle pens north of the tracks had been rebuilt.
And from Texas, the first of four hundred thousand cattle began the slow crawl north.

PRP New Release Home For His Heart by Angela Raines -- Free Giveaway

Angela will be giving away a free ebook of HOME FOR HIS HEART to one lucky person who comments on this blog.

BLURB
Clara Cross ran away as a young girl after the suspicious deaths of her parents, and has spent the last nine years trying to find safety from a man she had reason to fear. Finally landing in the small town of Agate Gulch in the high Colorado mountains, she believes she may have found a safe home at last, and can send for the brother she had to leave behind. Sam Tower is the man she loves—but would he ever give her a second glance? When Clara’s past catches up with her, her survival depends on her own strength and courage, as well as Sam’s.

Sam Tower runs on a ranch with his friend, Paul Ward, near Agate Gulch. Sam has been running from the past since the loss of his family, and the injury he received as a fife and drum boy in the Civil War. Clara is everything he admires and loves—but she is too good a person for him. When Clara is kidnapped, Sam begins a journey of discovery and finds what he’s always wanted—a HOME FOR HIS HEART.

EXCERPT:

“So, Sally, are you and Paul ever going to get married?”
Paul Ward and Sam Tower had started ranching on the Welty spread five miles outside of town a year ago. They’d taken over after John Welty was killed in a stampede. They were new hires when the accident happened. Mrs. Welty was happy to sell to them, especially since Paul was hurt while trying to save John.
Paul and Sally had been spending quite a lot of time together. Clara thought they were perfect for each other. She hoped for an announcement soon. Her friend deserved to be happy.
“He has to ask me first,” Sally said as she blushed. “And what about you and Sam?”
“What about me and Sam? We’re just friends, nothing more, so stop your matchmaking, you hear?” Clara laughed, turning her head so Sally wouldn't see the moisture in her eyes.
Clara admitted to herself, she was half in love with Sam. Tall Sam with the brown eyes, dark brows, and blond hair. Clara knew he enjoyed her company, but just as friends. No one would want someone who looked like her.
“No one’ll want an ugly girl like you.” The words from her childhood kept running through her mind every time she thought of Sam. If only she were pretty.
Sally’s insistent words broke through Clara’s reflections.
“But Clara, he is a great catch. He’s a hard worker, kind, and considerate. And he doesn’t like to fight—unlike some of the others around here.”
“I’m not blind, but—let’s finish bringing out the food.” Clara said, hoping to change the subject.
Clara was glad Sam was a friend. It started with her cooking, and a comfortable friendship had grown from those first few meals. With her looks, Clara knew it would never be more.
From inside the restaurant, Clara heard the sound of horses running, then coming to a stop. The door flew open, and in walked Sam and Paul.
   “Where’s the pie?” shouted Paul.
“Where’s the tables?” asked Sam at the same time.
“The pies are safe from your sticky fingers. You’ll have to wait, just like the others,” said Sally as she walked up to Paul. She threw her arms around his waist, raising her face for a kiss.
He pulled her close for a quick kiss and hug.
“With the weather so nice, we’ve decided to eat outside this year,” said Clara, in answer to Sam’s question.
“Don’t tell me you moved the tables outside by yourselves,” said Sam. “If you’d waited, we could have helped.”
“You’re just in time to help set up the barrels and planks,” Clara replied.
“Point us in the right direction,” Paul said, as he moved toward the door.
“Be glad to help,” said Sam, following Paul out the door.
Soon, the area was full of talk and laughter. Clara stood off to the side watching. Her friends and patrons were enjoying her offerings—a warm and happy feeling. How far she’d come since that fateful night when she ran away and changed her name!

PRP New Release: Cast Away Heart by Sarah J. McNeal -- Giveaway

CAST AWAY HEART by Sarah J. McNeal

An abandoned piano, rejected love, and hope

Blurb:
After her fiancé humiliates her and breaks her heart on what was to be their wedding day, Ella Dubois has vowed never to open her heart again.

Nickoli Vesa, a Romanian pianist, has loved Ella for years, but she sees him only as her best friend.

How can a deserted piano heal a shattered spirit and inspire it to sing again?

Excerpt:
There it stood like a brave soldier, silent in its despair and covered in snow.  One of the ornately carved legs had rotted away and lie on the ground beside it causing the piano to list to that side.  It resembled an old ship that had taken a huge wave and, as the water began to fill its hull, was sinking slowly into the sea.  The wooden underside of the keys had begun to swell and dislodge from the smooth white pads.  The black keys had eroded into splinters and the top of the piano had caved in on the piano wires.
Ella choked back a sob at the sorrowful sight.  How could that awful man watch this happen to such a beautiful instrument? The piano could have brought the joy of music to so many.  How much hatred could he possibly have to find delight in watching the destruction of his wife’s piano?  What a despicable human being.
Nickoli drove the car to the side of the road and stopped.  He turned to Ella and gathered her up into his arms.  “You must stop mourning, inima mea.  Until you stop longing for things to be different, you cannot change your future.  You cannot let happiness in.  You understand, yes?”
She knew he was not talking to her about the piano.  He was talking about Mark.  There was no way for him to understand the pain she still felt from Mark’s rejection.  The memory of her standing there at the front of the church with her friends and family all present as her father announced there would be no wedding that day was still sharp enough to cut into her heart.  “I need time, Nick.  I can’t just let it go like it never happened.”  She pushed back from his embrace and met his eyes.  “It’s the worst thing that ever happened to me.”
He did not take his eyes from hers.  Removing his hands from around her, he moved back into his seat.  “All is required, you let go.  Stop looking back or you cannot see where you are going.”

Excerpt

The June air was balmy as Matthew Manning stepped out of the Eppley Airport terminal. He hefted his duffle bag up on his shoulder as he whistled and yelled, “Taxi!”
A yellow cab rushed to the curb. The cabbie stepped from the cab and took the bag, stowing it into the trunk.
“Where to, Mack?” he asked as he slid into the front seat of the cab. He peered into the rear view mirror at the soldier sitting in the back seat.
    “330 Manning Lane.”
Even to his own ears, the address sounded foreign to him. It had been so long since he’d said it out loud.
The taxi wove in and out of the five o’clock rush hour traffic. Matthew sat silently in the back seat, looking out of the passenger side window. Nothing much had changed, he thought as the cabbie drove over the bridge into Council Bluffs, Iowa.
The taxi continued down Broadway, passing all the fa-miliar sights. He looked a little closer as they passed Ewald’s Drive-In, hoping to catch a glimpse of a face he might recognize as the carhops walked out in their short shorts to deliver an order to the waiting cars. But he didn’t know any of the girls.
Memories of being a kid and watching westerns with his twin brother, Marcus, flashed through his mind as they passed the Strand Theater. John Wayne movies had been their favorites while growing up. You knew the good guys were always going to win in the end. He shook his head sadly. If only that were true in real life…

New Release Thursday: For Love of Banjo by Sarah J. McNeal

Deceit stands between Banjo Wilding’s love for Maggie O’Leary and his search for the father he never knew.

Banjo Wilding wears a borrowed name and bears the scars and reputation of a lurid past.  To earn the right to ask for Margaret O’Leary’s hand, he must find his father and make something of himself.

Margaret O’Leary has loved Banjo since she was ten years old but standing between her and Banjo is pride, Banjo’s mysterious father and the Great War.

Excerpt:

Hazard, Wyoming
October 1916
Banjo Wilding sat on the back porch, dug in his pocket, unfolded the letter Belle left for him before she died and began to read it one more time. He pushed the wire-framed glasses up onto the bridge of his nose, spread the worn-out paper on his knee and read it for the hundredth time.
 Dear Banjo,
If you are reading this letter I must be dead. I left everything I own to you. Do what you want with the saloon but I ask you, as a favor to me, to help my employees find decent work and a home.
Your mother left a sealed envelope for you to deliver to Mr. Richard Dutton in New York City. His address is on the envelope. She wanted me to give it to you when I thought the time was right. When you find him, you’ll find your father.
I want you to have a wonderful life, Banjo, with a loving wife and family some day. You deserve it.
Best regards,
Annabelle Lee
When he finished, he folded it and placed it back in his pocket. A chilly wind bit at his cheek and overhead a red-tailed hawk flew on silent wings circling the pasture for some dinner—a rabbit probably. The smell of wood-smoke drifted on the wind and reminded him that autumn would soon turn into winter. He didn’t have much time left to make a decision about what to do. The snow grew mighty deep in Wyoming winters, and traveling anywhere would be at an end when that happened.

WHAT MAKES A GREAT PLOT? OR ....... WHAT MAKES A PLOT???? By Gail L. Jenner

Is there an EXACT number of PLOT "TEMPLATES"? DO PLOTS EVEN HAVE TO FOLLOW A TEMPLATE OR PATTERN???   Yes??  No?? Maybe??
If not, how do writers "arrive" at a plot?

As a writing teacher I have had many students ask about PLOT and how to develop it. They wanted to create a plot and then plug in whatever characters might move through the episodes of their stories.

In the beginning, I didn’t know how to turn that notion around, although I sensed that starting with PLOT was not the answer.  As I analyzed the stories that touched me most profoundly -- the novels and stories that were keepers, I discovered that plot was not the primary tool used.......Unfortunately, I now believe some writers think that if they can just get hold of the right kind of plot – or set up a series of actions/events that will make their story exciting -- that the work involved in developing a good story might also come easily.

I sincerely believe this is a mistake.  I also believe that even if there was such a thing as the most PERFECT plot -- it would NOT make the act of writing any easier at all!

In the quest to understand plot, I have picked up a number of books over the years. In 20 Master Plots (And How to Build Them), Ronald Tobias asks that very question: “How may plots are there?” He then lists a number of possible answers, including: Thousands or maybe millions? Sixty-nine? Thirty-six? OR Two, period?

I had to laugh the first time I read that….I knew that Aristotle had ascribed to the two basic plot theory, but the other responses were new to me. I learned that Rudyard Kipling ascribed to the idea of sixty-nine plots (WHY 69??), and Carlo Gozzi (who?) felt there were thirty six (Okay….).

Honestly, I don’t know if there IS an absolute answer to the question of plots, but I do recognize that in life, there are universal questions that seem to come up every day, no matter where we live or who we are. These are the deep, deep questions that each of us has to answer for ourselves about our life. I now see those deeper questions as being the force or energy behind any great story.

Plot, then, seems to grow out of those questions, and those are the same questions that our characters must confront and resolve. So for me, the POWER in story comes out of character (NOT plot); that is, Plot IS Character.  OR – another way to say it is that “character + conflict = plot”.

So does that mean there are two or thirty-six or sixty-nine or thousands of plots out there? I’m still not sure. There is an unlimited number of possible complications and conflicts, but how many ways can a character resolve his/her conflict? Interesting question, right?

There is, of course, tragedy. There is also comedy and adventure, etc., but those are actually genres – which do, in fact, carry certain plot elements that become part of a reader’s expectation. They are the patterns that most writers instinctively or deliberately follow.

Writers recognize that readers expect a number of predictable elements to be present when they pick up their preferred genre. Break those unwritten “rules” and you may have some very frustrated readers. For instance, in a romance, a reader generally expects a “happy ever after” ending; if not entirely “happy,” the ending must at least be satisfying – or else that story/novel may end up thrown against the wall.

Of course, readers of “literary” fiction are often looking for those less predictable elements – even the less than satisfactory ending. I always found it amusing when my students would tell me that literary fiction was just boring fiction and that’s what made it literary

What matters most to a writer should be that he/she understand the elements of a particular genre (if a commercial genre is the goal), and along with that the patterns that lend themselves to the selected genre. However, that does not mean a writer can lean on those prescribed elements and forsake deep character and the questions that arise from a character’s internal struggle. No matter how simple a plotline a writer may employ, it is character that makes a story unforgettable.

So how do we arrive at those deep character questions?

We all face similar issues in life and great stories reflect those issues, eg: What complex choices can we then set up as obstacles that our hero or heroine must face and overcome? What dilemmas can we forge, which force our readers to recognize that there are no easy solutions in life, that sometimes doing the right thing actually means doing the “wrong” thing? Or what sacrifices will our protagonists have to make in order to get or have or achieve their goals? What losses are required in order to “win?”

This kind of thinking, this kind of character development is, in my opinion, what takes an average story into the better and best category of story. So, the challenge should be to take our characters on a journey that causes our readers to cheer or cry or scream!

As in the words of Willa Cather, “There are only two or three human stories, and they go on repeating themselves as fiercely as if they had never happened before.”

These are the kinds of dilemmas I played with when creating the characters that people my newly re-released WILLA Award-winning novel, ACROSS THE SWEET GRASS HILLS from Prairie Rose Publications. It’s more than just a romance. It’s the story of a man, a woman, and a people – all pitted against the terrifying and historical drama of the little-known Baker’s Massacre of the Blackfeet in 1870. Questions of loyalty, sacrifice, love, and forgiveness are the questions each of the characters must answer for themselves.

In appreciation and gratitude, I’d like to offer TWO free downloads of ACROSS THE SWEET GRASS HILLS! Leave a comment and I’ll enter your name into a drawing.
TWO winners will be selected on WEDNESDAY of this week!

NEW RELEASE THURSDAY--JASON'S ANGEL--AND GIVEAWAY! by Cheryl Pierson

Cheryl Pierson: author, editor, and co-founder of Prairie Rose Publications
Today, I’m blogging about one of my most recent releases, JASON’S ANGEL. In case this title sounds familiar to you, it was previously released in an anthology with Victory Tales Press, and also as single-sell short story with Western Trail Blazer. It's making its "re-release appearance" with PRAIRIE ROSE PUBLICATIONS now, with an awesome new cover.

I’m excited about JASON'S ANGEL being released as a “stand alone” story, selling at only .99 ! I’m giving away two copies of JASON’S ANGEL today! Please leave a comment along with your contact info and you will be entered—it’s that simple.

Jason’s Angel takes on several issues with the society of that time. The story takes place just as the War Between the States is winding down. Jason wears Union blue, but speaks with a Georgia accent. To make things even more difficult, he’s half Cherokee, half Scottish! When he’s wounded and winds up at a Confederate hospital, there’s only one thing kind-hearted Sabrina Patrick can do…
Two wounded Union soldiers will die without proper treatment. Sabrina Patrick realizes they won't get it at the Confederate army hospital where she helps nurse wounded men. She does the unthinkable and takes them to her home. JASON'S ANGEL by Cheryl Pierson, from Prairie Rose Publications

Two wounded Union soldiers will die without proper treatment. Sabrina Patrick realizes they won't get it at the Confederate army hospital where she helps nurse wounded men. She does the unthinkable and takes them to her home.

Jason McCain’s pain is eased by the feel of clean sheets, a soft bed, and a touch that surely must belong to an angel. But what reason could an angel have for bringing him and his brother here?

EXCERPT FROM JASON'S ANGEL:

It was only a brief touch of their lips, Sabrina told herself, and should not have caused the waves of trembling heat to rush over her. His lips were firm and strong. And she kissed him back.

He’d reached up and gently pulled her to him. As if he’d sensed her concern over Desi being in the room, he’d glanced to where she sat talking to Eli, once more engrossed in conversation, and when Sabrina had started to protest, he’d squeezed her shoulder in silent reassurance. And she had kissed him back.

He’d been so gentle and—oh Lord, had Eli seen that kiss? She had responded heartily to his brother. She had not pushed Jason away or protested in the least. She had welcomed it. There was no doubt for either of them. She had definitely kissed him back.

As she pulled away, she opened her lids to find him watching her. His dark eyes smoldered with desire. But it didn’t scare her. It excited her.

Good Lord. She stood quickly, her head spinning so that she almost missed her first step toward the door. When had she last eaten? That had to be the cause of her unsteadiness. But why was her heart pounding so frantically? It was only a kiss. One kiss.

But she had kissed him back.

Prairie Rose Publications Presents: The Half-Breed’s Woman by Cheryl Pierson

I'M GIVING AWAY A DIGITAL COPY OF THE HALF-BREED'S WOMAN TODAY! JUST LEAVE A COMMENT WITH YOUR CONTACT INFO IN IT TO BE ENTERED IN THE DRAWING!

U.S. Deputy Marshal Jaxson McCall tracks runaway debutante Callie Buchanan from Washington, D.C., into the unforgiving badlands of Indian Territory.  But once the sparks fly between them, can he bring himself to take the beautiful young woman in to face an attempted murder charge?

Callie's greedy stepfather, a powerful government official, has his own plans for her—a  fate much worse than jail. Jaxson must protect her at all costs—even if it means his own death—or losing his heart to “The Half-Breed’s Woman”.

Excerpt:

Callie stretched out on her bed, her thoughts scattering in all directions. She’d stayed here in Fort Smith too long. By now, she knew they’d be searching the entire country for her. But, maybe by coming west, she would elude the whole bunch of them. She sighed as she turned onto her stomach.
The hotel was nice, with a clean room and a comfortable bed. The people in Arkansas seemed so friendly. Much more so than in Washington. They wouldn’t be so friendly if they knew what she’d done.
Who would have thought she’d become a murderess before her eighteenth birthday? She had killed a man, but her stepfather had left her no choice. Not after the things he’d said to her.
Tears filled her eyes, and she flopped restlessly onto her back, staring up at the ceiling. A life for a life. Deep in her heart she knew Dunstan Treadwell had killed her mother. She just couldn’t prove it. And who would’ve believed her anyway?
Her stepfather was a very well-respected and influential man in Washington. He’d been in a hurry to marry her mother for her money, but Callie knew Treadwell already had run through most of it.
Did anyone else know? He’d kept it well-hidden. But, she was certain his gambling cronies knew what kind of financial distress he was in. That was why he was determined to—
She jerked her thoughts away quickly. Unbearable thoughts.

Author Spotlight - Cheryl Pierson - Fun & Random Facts (SEE LINK BELOW FOR ORIGINAL POST AT FREE EBOOKS DAILY!I just added pictures in this one!) http://www.freeebooksdaily.com/2013/12/author-spotlight-cheryl-pierson-fun.html When I was growing up ... everyone thought I would be a writer. I wrote all the time, and in school, other kids would say, "Why did you write a whole page? We only had to write a paragraph!" I once ... talked my dad into taking a helicopter ride with me at the Oklahoma State Fair when I was about ten years old. Looking back on it, I realize that was the moment when he let his love for me override his fear and good sense. I used to work ... as a "security guard" in the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. I loved that job--met new people every day, wandered amongst beautiful artwork, and it was probably the most interesting job I ever had. Everyday... I start the day off with petting my Great Pyrenees "grandchild", Embry. He's a rescue dog my daughter adopted and we took him when she had to move to a place with no fence. I like to... sleep late in the mornings and work late at night. And I can do that, now that my husband has retired! One day I hope to have a book on the NYT bestseller list! DREAM BIG, I say! I am thankful for... my life, as simple as it may be--my older sister is in a nursing home after a stroke 5 years ago. She is only 68 but must be in a wheelchair and is dependent on others for everything. I never complain about getting older. I write best... in the early afternoons. I used to be a "morning person," but not anymore--and when evening rolls around, I'm ready for bed. I am working on several things...a short story for Prairie Rose Publications' Valentine's Day anthology, Hearts and Spurs; a chapter in the Wolf Creek series from the Western Fictioneers for the next Ford Fargo collaboration; and editing a western romance manuscript that will be released in late February. The most exciting thing I'm working on is the opening of my own publishing company Prairie Rose Publishing, with a long time friend, Livia Reasoner. This just happened in August. I have always wanted to... open an animal rescue shelter and work with animals who need a good home. There are so many of them out there and awareness needs to be raised--we can all do something to help, even if it's just donating a few dollars a month to a shelter for dog food.
