The Heroes We Love by Sarah J. McNeal #PrairieRosePub #TheWildingsSeries

The Heroes We Love by Sarah J. McNeal

#PrairieRosePub #TheWildingsSeries

One of my favorite heroes is Robin Pierpont in the story, FLY AWAY HEART. He loves airplanes, his friends, family, animals, and the beautiful red haired girl he’s known since childhood, Lilith Wilding. There is nothing he wouldn’t do for those he loves…even something not quite legal.

Robin was born in England. At age ten he lost his father when he and his parents took the doomed Titanic to find a better life in America. His mother worked in a factory in New York City, but lost her job when the factory burned. Banjo Wilding sent Robin and Jane to Hazard, Wyoming to give them an opportunity to improve their lives. In Hazard, Jane fell in love with the Lakota Shaman, gas station owner, and uncle to Banjo Wilding, Teekonka Red Sky. (Their story is in my Christmas story, A HUSBAND FOR CHRISTMAS).

It was in the town of Hazard Robin first met the adventurous, willful, and charming Lilith Wilding. His childhood affection for Lilith grew into a deep abiding love over the years. But there are obstacles standing between Robin and his happiness with Lilith…and one of those obstacles may prove fatal.

Excerpt:

Lilith pushed back from Robin enough to see his eyes.  “I know you’re dying to ask Juliet for a dance.  You could go over and break in, if you like.  She doesn’t care much for Paul Witherspoon any way.”

His eyes grew wide and his mouth pulled to one side.  “Are you trying to get rid of me, Lilith?”  He quirked a crooked smile at her.  “Do I have grease under my fingernails or something?  I swear I took a bath before I came.”

Lilith laughed as he dipped her low over his thigh then bent over her as if he would kiss her.  “Don’t you dare drop me.  I’ll scream bloody murder.”  Underneath her words, her heart thumped against her ribs and her breath quickened.

Robin laughed, deep and unconfined.  Pulling her up, he brought her close to his chest and peered at her with a sparkle of mischief in his eyes.  “Now I want to drop you just to see if you’ll hold good on that threat.”

Her heart thudded in her chest like a mad thing.  She couldn’t breathe with his mouth so close to hers.  If she could have a wish at that moment, it would be for Robin to dip his head just a little more and touch his lips to hers.  A tide of heat ran up her neck into her face just thinking about Robin kissing her with his hands on her bare back.

He lifted a brow and chuckled.  “Are you thinking something naughty, Miss Wilding?  I swear you’re blushing.”

Excerpt:

The dog drew his attention when it whined pitifully. Its brown eyes seemed to plead with him. Somehow, he just couldn’t bring himself to walk away from the suffering creature. If he couldn’t get to Lilith, at least he could get this dog to safety. He knew, if he left the poor thing here, it would die a slow death for certain.

He made his way to the shaking pile of bones that resembled a dog and removed the clamp on the heavy chain. The dog could barely walk, and it made Rob sick to see the bones protruding from the animal’s ribs and hips. What kind of human beings were these two men? Did they eat babies for breakfast? He hoisted the dog into his arms, walked back to the car, opened the back door and placed the dog on his jacket on the back seat. Something in its brown eyes looked like gratitude, mixed with fear. Rob felt his heart crack.

“Don’t you worry, little girl, I’m going to see to you now. You don’t need to be scared or hungry anymore.” Thoughts of Lilith drummed through his mind. Please, please God, look after my Lilith and don’t let them hurt her.

Excerpt:

There was no choice left. The roaring river was her only hope. To escape these vile men she would have to take her chances and plunge into the deadly current of the white water. With a deep breath to gather her courage, she dived into the rapids. The icy water took her breath. She never imagined it that cold. Helpless to navigate, the current took her down its dangerous path. The weight of her dress drug on her as she attempted to nudge her body toward the rocky island in the middle of the river. Lilith gulped water and fought against the pull of the current. If she could just get to the rocks, she could keep from going over the falls. Certain death would take her if she went over, but there was no turning back now.

Shots rang out and a bullet whizzed past her ear. As she bobbed for an instant above the water, she saw that Edgar had a pistol in his hand aimed at her. He mouthed something at her, but the noise of the rushing water drown out his words. Just as well. She couldn’t get back to the shore if she tried. The current swept her in its cold embrace. Sometimes it rolled her under. She took on water. Her lungs hurt for want of air and the water burned them. Please God, don’t let me die this way.

The river dragged her along, pushed her under, and turned her over and over in a mad rush for the falls and she couldn’t stop it. A picture of Robin came to her. His voice seemed to command her. Don’t give up. Don’t give up. Don’t give up.

During one of Taggart's regular visits to the former Kansas territorial capital of Lecompton, local rancher, James Harper, enlists the marshal's help to catch the cattle rustlers intent on stealing his livelihood. But Kansas is just beginning its reign as the wildest state in the Union, and Taggart must also deal with Jayhawkers, highwaymen, unpredictable weather and those hell-bent on revenge. Forced to watch as his plantation was burned to the ground by one of the slaves, Bayonne has sunk to the bottom of the barrel. A drunkard who has only his consuming hatred to sustain him, he makes his way from Louisiana to San Francisco, barely managing to survive on the Barbary Coast.

Just when he thinks he has nothing to live for, he discovers that William Sherman, the former slave who torched his home, is alive and well—and Sherman bears a hatred for his former master to match Bayonne’s. When Sherman bests Bayonne in a fight, the once-wealthy Southerner wakes up in a coffin, prepared for a fate he could never have imagined.

Hatred fuels Bayonne’s survival, but Sherman has cursed his nemesis with powerful voodoo magic that dooms him to an eternity of only half-living in the twilight existence of a zombie. Can an old Chinaman provide the answers Bayonne needs to survive in the world of the UNDEAD?

Letting Go Of A Beloved Character by Sarah J. McNeal

PRP Blog Feb. 2016

Letting Go of a Beloved Character

Writing a series is a pleasure and a pain. When I wrote HARMONICA JOE’S RELUCTANT BRIDE, I had no intention of writing a sequel, much less, an entire series, but that’s exactly what happened. I wrote about the wild young boy, Banjo, who raised himself until he was 16. After he saved Lola Wilding’s wife and began to help Joe on the ranch, Joe’s father, Ben Wilding, saw Banjo’s worth and adopted him. Of course, a bunch of adventures and children have happened since then. Banjo has become a grandfather and so has Joe. Ben has passed on to the other side while Wilding grandchildren have grown into adults. The generations are moving on into the 1950’s.
While I find writing about the Wildings and other people in the fictional town of Hazard, Wyoming is great fun for me, there are some hard things, and some sad things. There are some dilemmas and there are challenges to remember things. What color are the eyes and hair of each of my characters? Who is related to whom? The worst dilemma of all is when is it time to bring about the death of a character that has grown old? I mentioned that Ben had died, saying only that he was buried alongside some of the family’s beloved pets. He is positioned high on a hill above the soothing still waters of a pond. But what about Joe and Lola Wilding? What shall I do when Banjo and Maggie Wilding reach the end of their time?

I never actually wrote that Joe and Lola had passed on. I couldn’t bear to write about that. In The BEAST OF HAZARD, a short story for the Halloween anthology, I had the two of them on a long deserved trip. And then I did not say another word about them. I let them quietly slip from the pages of the Wilding stories.
And then there’s Banjo Wilding, the wise but tough half Lakota who was introduced at the beginning of the series and still remains along with the love of his life and the mother of his three boys, Maggie. The boys have grown into men now. Sam has married and so has Hank. Hank’s story, HOME FOR THE HEART, is waiting for edits at present. I’m currently writing about his twin, Kit in IT’S ONLY MAKE BELIEVE. Of course, Kyle Red Sky who is a cousin of the Wilding clan will get his story, too. But Banjo is a character that has become like my own family. I can’t let him go. I can’t even allow him to fade away. I have no one to take his place, to offer wisdom and comfort. Are the cousins going to have to manage to care for each other on their own now?
I keep a notebook of the Wilding family tree and special notes about each character, their gestures, looks, desires and dreams, I don’t have a notebook that says when it’s time to let go of a beloved character. It’s painful this letting go. For me, the most difficult part of writing a series is letting go of a character and trying to figure out how to let them go. I can’t allow Banjo to just slip away in silence. Banjo is 62 years old in 1956 where I am presently in the Wildings series. He has been in every Wilding story since the very beginning. He even had his very own love story in FOR LOVE OF BANJO, my second Wilding book. I only have one more story in the 1950’s before I begin writing about the next generation of Wildings. I know the time is coming soon when I will have to find a way to say goodbye to Banjo.  Honestly, I think it will be the most sorrowful thing I ever write.
Have any of you written a series or read a series where a main character died? What was the most significant part of letting a character go for you? How would you do it? Have you read the death of a main character that meant a great deal to you or left an impression on you that lasted a long time? I’m open to your ideas and suggestions.

A Day Dedicated To Foolishness

How many times have you fallen for the old April Fool’s tricks like, “Ohmagosh, you have an earring missing!” Then the person laughs like crazy as you go into a panic searching the ground for that expensive earring your husband or boyfriend gave you only to find you have both earrings safely attached to your ears?

Or, maybe you’re the jokester who prepares days in advance of April first thinking up gags and tricks to play on your friends. I was one of those. I tried everything from “your shoe laces are untied,” to, “Are those your panties around your ankles?” Silly stuff, but fun. You had to get your gags in early before others got there first and the surprise was gone.

So, as I was contemplating my gags for this April Fool day, I wondered,  how did the whole April Fool’s Day tricks get started in the first place? Well, I went on an investigation to find out the answer. To my surprise, I found no certain answers to the history of April Fool, but I did find some possibilities.

According to David Johnson and Shmuel Ross, it could have been related to the change of seasons. Ever heard the term “spring fever”?  Others believe it may have been attributed to a change in the calendar. Here’s one I didn’t know for certain: the beginning of the New Year used to be celebrated on April first in some cultures. Who knew? The New Year was celebrated at the time of the vernal equinox which we know as the first day of spring on March 21. In Medieval times, most of Europe celebrated the Feast of Annunciation on March 25. In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII ordered a new calendar (to be called the Gregorian Calendar, of course) to replace the old Julian Calendar. The new calendar would make January 1 as the New Year. I guess we’re still holding on to that one. So naturally, those that accepted the new calendar liked to give the ones still following the old calendar a hard time by sending them on a “fool’s errand.”

Joseph Boskin, a professor of history at Boston University, has another explanation for the history of April Fool’s Day. It goes like this:  At the time of Constantine’s reign, a group of court jesters and fools told the Roman emperor that he could do a better job of running his empire. Constantine thought it was funny and decided to make the court jester, Krugel, king for a day. During his one day as king, Krugel declared April first as a day for absurdity. Professor Boskin said that, in those days, jesters were actually very wise men. It was the roll of jesters to put things in perspective through humor. I can understand that concept. How many times have we seen people make drama out of nothing and then the Late Night comics (our form of court jester) bring us back down to Earth with a funny comment on the matter and make us laugh at the absurdity of it all? Prof. Boskin’s theory was printed by the Associated Press in 1983. But here’s the good part: He made the whole thing up and sent the AP on a “Fool’s Errand.” Loved this explanation the best.

Here’s one last theory:

The French call April 1 Poisson d'Avril, or "April Fish." French children sometimes tape a picture of a fish on the back of their schoolmates, crying "Poisson d'Avril" when the prank is discovered.
I wonder if this is where the phrase, “There’s something fishy going on here,” comes from.

Have a wonderful and very fun day celebrating April Fool’s Day, y’all. I’m off to torment my friends and family with my tricks and gags.

New Release Thursday: For Love of Banjo by Sarah J. McNeal

Deceit stands between Banjo Wilding’s love for Maggie O’Leary and his search for the father he never knew.

Banjo Wilding wears a borrowed name and bears the scars and reputation of a lurid past.  To earn the right to ask for Margaret O’Leary’s hand, he must find his father and make something of himself.

Margaret O’Leary has loved Banjo since she was ten years old but standing between her and Banjo is pride, Banjo’s mysterious father and the Great War.

Excerpt:

Hazard, Wyoming
October 1916
Banjo Wilding sat on the back porch, dug in his pocket, unfolded the letter Belle left for him before she died and began to read it one more time. He pushed the wire-framed glasses up onto the bridge of his nose, spread the worn-out paper on his knee and read it for the hundredth time.
 Dear Banjo,
If you are reading this letter I must be dead. I left everything I own to you. Do what you want with the saloon but I ask you, as a favor to me, to help my employees find decent work and a home.
Your mother left a sealed envelope for you to deliver to Mr. Richard Dutton in New York City. His address is on the envelope. She wanted me to give it to you when I thought the time was right. When you find him, you’ll find your father.
I want you to have a wonderful life, Banjo, with a loving wife and family some day. You deserve it.
Best regards,
Annabelle Lee
When he finished, he folded it and placed it back in his pocket. A chilly wind bit at his cheek and overhead a red-tailed hawk flew on silent wings circling the pasture for some dinner—a rabbit probably. The smell of wood-smoke drifted on the wind and reminded him that autumn would soon turn into winter. He didn’t have much time left to make a decision about what to do. The snow grew mighty deep in Wyoming winters, and traveling anywhere would be at an end when that happened.
