This is Part 4 of my four-part series about my favorite rodeo songs, which came about because July 4, 2019 was the 150th anniversary of the Deer Trail Rodeo in Deer Trail, Colorado. It was a rodeo from my younger days that I didn't miss.

In Part 1, I promised pictures of me as the Brush Rodeo Queen c. 1970. I couldn’t locate the one rodeo queen picture I wanted, but I did locate a newspaper article and picture. I also found a picture of me as 1^st Attendant for the Standard Quarter Horse Association c. 1971.

My horse’s name was Stonewall Jackson. He and I won many performance events in 4-H and other quarter horse riding and showing competitions such as obstacle trail, English pleasure, and western pleasure. We were a force to be reckoned with in the show ring for many years. Later, my brother (12 years younger) rode Jackson to local fame, too. Just for kicks and giggles, here are pictures of me and Jackson – c. 1970-1972.

I also mentioned in a comment that I had a picture of me in the very fashionable fringed leather jacket of the 1950 and early 1960s. I’m the little one at about 10 years old. The other two are my sibling cousins.

I digressed…back to my Top 7 Favorite Rodeo-Themed Songs.

The song that sparked the embers then lit the fire of romantic angst in my teenager’s writing heart—

The song that spawned the first novel I ever wrote [high school] (which has thankfully been lost to the ages)—

The song that references my home state of Colorado… (I love this song so much.)

Someday Soon – performed by Judy Collins

Someday Soon was written by Canadian singer-songwriter Ian Tyson. He and his wife Sylvia recorded the song in 1964, but they didn’t release it as a single then. Someday Soon has been covered by Judy Collins, Moe Bandy, and Suzy Bogguss with chart-hitting success. The Kingston Trio, Chris LeDoux, Crystal Gayle, Glen Campbell, Lynn Anderson, and a host of other singers also have versions.

Someday Soon is listed in the Top 100 Western Songs of all time by members of Western Writers of America.* 

Here is an interesting note— Judy’s version is categorized as ‘folk’, not western.

Here are two Someday Soon videos for your listening pleasure. The first is Judy Collins’ rendition. The second is Judy singing with Ian and Sylvia Tyson. About mid-video, the music cuts to Judy offering an anecdote about recording the song.

Rodeo Songs by Kaye Spencer - Part 3 of 4 - Countdown of Kaye's 7 Favorite Rodeo Songs #rodeo #rodeosongs #prairierosepubs

This is Part 3 of my four-part series about my favorite rodeo songs, which came about because July 4, 2019 was the 150th anniversary of the Deer Trail Rodeo in Deer Trail, Colorado. It was a rodeo from my younger days that I didn't miss.

In Part 1, I promised pictures of me as the Brush Rodeo Queen c. 1970 before this series is finished. I STILL haven’t located those pictures… :-(

So far, my seven favorite rodeo-related songs are:

As with the other song pairings, my Numbers 2 and 3 share a similar theme (not sure what that says about my personality…).

Country music artist Lynn Anderson, released Rodeo Cowboy in 1969. She re-released it in 1989. In 1969, the lyrics to Rodeo Cowboy *spoke* to my 14-year-old self as heartbreakingly, knee-weakingly romantic. This song inspired the first novel I ever wrote—hand-written on narrow-lined notebook paper. I lost this story somewhere, somehow along the path of my life’s travels, which isn’t a bad thing. It was an awful story. ;-)

Chris LeDoux covered this song and changed the lyrics to the cowboy’s point of view. You can read those altered lyrics HERE.

Glenn Sutton, who was married to Lynn Anderson from 1968 to 1977, wrote Rodeo Cowboy. As an aside, he also wrote or co-wrote songs for Tammy Wynette and David Houston. Sutton also served as producer for Lynn Anderson’s albums.

The theme of Rodeo Cowboy and two of George Strait’s rodeo songs, Amarillo by Morning and I Can Still Make Cheyenne share similar stories of the obsession with the rodeo and the impossibility of a lasting relationship.

According to Wikipedia (HERE), Amarillo by Morning is listed in the Top 100 Western Songs of all time by the Western Writers of America. This song was written and recorded in 1973 (reaching #37 on country music charts), but it didn’t become the iconic rodeo song until George Strait covered it in 1983. It is typically considered his signature song.

Rodeo Songs by Kaye Spencer – Part 2 of 4 – Countdown of Kaye’s 7 Favorite Rodeo Songs #rodeo #rodeosongs #prairierosepubs

This is Part 2 of my four-part series about my favorite rodeo songs, which came about because July 4, 2019 was the 150th anniversary of the Deer Trail Rodeo in Deer Trail, Colorado. It was a rodeo from my younger days that I didn't miss.

Also in Part 1, I promised to post pictures of me as the Brush Rodeo Queen c. 1970 before this series is finished. I haven’t located those pictures yet. I will, though. I promise. Hopefully, I’ll have them for Part 3 in November.

Now, on to my favorite rodeo songs…

To remind us, coming in at Number 7 was Bad Brahma Bull sung by Chris LeDoux and Number 6 was Marty Robbins’ Strawberry Roan. The link above to the Part 1 blog has the videos of these songs.

Counting down, my Numbers 5 and 4 share the same theme:

Rodeo cowboy falls for a woman who breaks his heart and his spirit.

Number 5 is Bandy, the Rodeo Clown by Moe Bandy. It was released in 1975. Moe followed the rodeo circuit as a bull rider in his youth, but he turned to a career as a country music artist when the rodeo-related injuries weren’t worth the ride anymore.

Number 4 is another Marty Robbins song called All Around Cowboy (1979). Marty wrote this song, which isn’t surprising, since he wrote many of his songs.

Next month, Part 3 of my favorite rodeo songs will have Numbers 2 and 3. Any guesses?
